System of Rice Intensification
SRI - FARMERS’ SOLUTION
SRI was developed in the highlands of Madagascar in the 1980’s by a Jesuit Priest, Father Henri de Laudanis and has since 1999 been tried out successfully in 25 countries across the world providing farmers with increased yield and options.
SRI Practices
SRI is a system of growing rice that involves practices different from the traditional ways of growing rice. Some values associated with SRI Practices are,- Less seeds, less labor, less water and fewer external input. Transplanting in single seedling within 10-14 days of old seedling, Wider spacing between 25×25 cm and ideally in a square pattern rows to facilitate weeding. Early and frequent mechanical weeding to control weeds and to aerate the soil. Through this process it developed triple numbers of tillers; double numbers of food grains in the panicle thereby increased food production better than the traditional methods of farming.
The Rural Aid Service (RAS),Tuibuong, has been implementing the SRI project for the first time in Churachandpur District in 2009 as a pilot project sponsored by RNBA-SDTT successfully. However, it is to understand that, controversy is a must in any initiatives on scientific proof and change. The RAS piloting project on SRI in Churachandpur is a sort of research strategy and in fact witnesses a real success.
